Bean’s Judge Pick

March 20, 2010

I’m picking Lanie’s Boston Sports Team Outfit by Curiouser.

I really don’t have a better reason than “I like it.” Everything fits the dolls really well, which I feel is important to mention — fit is important! I also loved loved loved the idea of using the patterns for doll clothings. Everything looks like it was measured very exact, and the placement is great. Sometimes when you do this sort of thing, you run the risk of crooked placement, but that didn’t happen here. I think this would have easily smoked a ‘found objects’ challenge.

This also took into account where Lanie’s from, and I dig that the seamstress did something local for her. All the American Girls have a ‘place’ they’re from, and that’s something to be celebrated!

… plus, I’m impressed that someone impressed me with a sports outfit, when I don’t know anything about sports at all.

Mars’s Judge Picks: bonus round, final collection

May 7, 2009

Like Bean, I’m going to have to go with dollduds for my 2-in-1 pick. I love this outfit SO MUCH MORE as a 2-in-1 than I did as an activity outfit. I think it represents a 2-in-1 much better than the other pieces and also has that functionality element. Plus, thinking to turn the field hockey uni into a school uniform took some clever thinking, and I like that it apparently represents what a girl would do in real life.

For the final collection, I’m going with seejoansew, though there were quite a few sewers who put out at least two great pieces for review. However, I think Joan presented four creative, well-sewn, and different pieces for us. Two of her pieces were my favorites, and the others were usually close. How cute and versatile is her 2-in-1? So yes: very impressive designing and sewing, love her outfits. I love that her personal sense of style comes through but that we don’t see the same thing four times in her outfits.

Bean’s Final Picks:

May 7, 2009

2-in-1 pick: dollduds.

Dollduds gets my votes for several reasons. One, her outfit is attractive.

Also, it functions like something you’d see in real life. A kid going to a classy academy might actually have several uniform pieces that work together exactly like this for different events/classes/what have you. I like it when doll art imitates life.

Finally, the piece functions as a true two-in-one: you can still make two unique looks, but everything’s still cohesive enough to where you’d look at it all and go, “Oh, yes, all of these pieces are a part of the same set.”

My overall pick? This was really really hard, and I spent forever on it. BUT. Don’t get surprised if I say Dollduds.

I wanted to pick someone who entered all four rounds, first of all, because I feel like someone who did that deserves to win. Dolldud’s entries always made all of the judges go “Wow, that’s really really smart.” I especially remember being impressed at the Addy coat. That, on top of her kickin’ 2-in-1 entry and her sport uniform … well. Very strong show overall, and great work!

Supernonamegirl’s Picks for 2-in-1 and Final Collection

May 7, 2009

For the 2-in-1, I’m going to have to go with Seejoansew.
I really love the new skirt, it’s a great use of material and goes well with the bodice. The skirt is relatively simple base design, but the layering works amazing well, and adds up to a lot of work. And working with that material can’t have been easy. In a lot of ways, I think I like the new look better than the original, but I also have a known weakness for fairy costumes.
But, I think a doll could wear every piece of this costume at once (new skirt over old, maybe using the shawl in the original as a waist-thing), and still look decent, which is the mark of a true 2-in-1 outfit, in my opinion.

For the overall collection, this wasn’t as hard as I thought. That isn’t to say you all didn’t do a good job throughout the competition, but as I’m going back through the entries, one contestant consistently stood out in terms of design and construction: Dollduds.

While her designs were rarely my absolute favorites, I have to say, they were always up there. Her technical level has consistently been insane, and her designs themselves were always contemporary and wearable. It’s not even that I *would* wear any of her outfits, but more that I *want* to, very, very badly. While there were elements that were run-of-the-mill, there were a lot of pieces that you can’t just go to Target and buy, because they were so unique, due to their cuts, colors or construction. I think she has a distinct viewpoint and I’d love to see more of it.
